Japan has been launched the astronomy satellite ASTRO-H

Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has been successfully launched astronomy satellite ASTRO-H from the Tanegashima Space Center in Kagoshima Prefecture.

The satellite was launched on board H-IIA rocket, which was previously known as New X-ray Telescope (NeXT), and is expected to operate in low Earth orbit for 3 years.
Features of ASTRO-H Mission:

• ASTRO-H is the eye to study the hot & energetic universe. The ‘H’ refers to the word Japanese word Hitomi that means pupil or entrance window of the eye.

• Mission involves the 2700 KG satellite that is equipped with the Four telescopes & Six detectors, allowing it to study both “hard” and “soft” x-rays & gamma rays.

• High energy astronomy mission primarily seeks to study X-Rays emanating mainly from black holes and galaxy clusters.

• Mission was led by the JAXA in partnership with the NASA, European Space Agency, Canadian Space Agency, Netherlands Institute for Space Research & universities in Japan, Europe & North America.

Japan Industries is planning to set up manufacturing plant for US-2 amphibious aircraft in India

Japan’s ShinMaywa Industries is planning to set up a manufacturing plant of US-2 amphibious aircraft in India under the ‘Make in India’ initiative to cater to international demands. The move comes as Indian Navy plans to procure 6 such aircrafts between 2017 & 2022 by signing a government to government deal i.e. initial purchase being off the shelf.
Key facts:

• The government to government defence deal for purchasing of US-2 amphibious aircraft will be having a 30% offset clause.


• Under this clause, ShinMaywa will set up a manufacturing plant in India to cater to the global market since the demand for the aircraft is high.


• If the deal goes through, these aircrafts would be the 1st major export of Japanese defence item after the pacifist country had lifted its decades-long self-imposed embargo on export of weapons and India its 1st importer.


• US-2 amphibious aircraft: It has long range civilian & military applications and can land on choppy waters. Indian Navy is seeking to purchase it in order to monitor India’s vast coastline, islands and for use is disaster relief.

Japan unveiled 1st stealth fighter aircraft X 2

Japan unveiled country’s 1st stealth fighter aircraft X 2. The domestically built fighter aircraft seeks to augment defence capabilities of the country that is surrounded by the China & Russia that already have radar evading aircraft technology.

Aircraft X 2 is expected to undergo its 1st test flight in Feb. 2016.
Features of Aircraft X 2

• It has two engines, similar to the F-22 of the USA, and is 46 feet long by 30 feet wide and 15 feet tall.

• Its stealthy features include a special coating on the canopy that houses the pilot, as well as carbon fiber composite material that absorbs radar waves.

• It was built under the code name Mitsubishi Advanced Technology Demonstrator X by the country’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries limited.

• Apart from Mitsubishi, around 200 companies were involved in the development of the unarmed technology demonstrator.

• It was built at a cost of 340 million US dollars and is smaller than a standard jet fighter.

Computer Emergency Response Team-In inks cyber security agreements with 3 nations

The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has signed cyber-security agreement with its counter parts in Malaysia, Singapore and Japan. In this regard, the Union Cabinet chaired by the PM Narendra Modi has apprised the Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) signed between CERT-In and three nations.
Key facts:

• These MoUs are related to cyber security and shall promote closer co-operation for exchange of knowledge & experience. Each signatory country will share knowledge & experience in resolution, detection or prevention of security related incidents between India and the respective country.


• Malaysia: MoU between Computer Emergency Response Team-In and its Malaysian counterpart was signed in Kuala-Lumpur in November, 2015 during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Malaysia.


• Singapore: MoU between CERT-In and Singapore Computer Emergency Response Team (SingCERT), Cyber Security Agency (CSA) was signed in November, 2015 during Prime Minister’s visit to Singapore.


• Japan: MoU between CERT-In and Japan Computer Emergency Response Team Co-ordination Center (JPCERT/CC) was signed in December, 2015 through diplomatic exchange.

About the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In):

• CERT-In is nodal department under the aegis of Union Ministry of Communications & Information Technology that deals with cyber security threats like hacking and phishing in India.


• Headquarters: New Delhi. Objective: To protect Indian cyberspace and software infrastructure against destructive and hacking activities.


• Strengthen security related defence of the Indian Internet domain. Issue guidelines, vulnerability notes, advisories, and whitepapers regarding to information security practices, prevention,procedures, response and reporting of cyber security incidents.

India, Japan signed a protocol to amend double taxation avoidance pact

India and Japan have signed a Protocol for amending the existing convention for avoidance of double taxation and prevention of the fiscal evasion with respect to income taxes. The existing Convention for avoidance of double taxation and tax evasion was signed between both countries way back in 1989. The protocol was signed by the Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia behalf of India while Kenji Hiramatsu, Ambassador of Japan signed on behalf of the Govt. of Japan.
Key highlights:

• The Protocol provides for internationally accepted standards for effective exchange of information on tax matters.


• It includes the sharing of bank information & information without domestic tax interest.


• Facilitates sharing of the information received from Japan of Indian resident with other law enforcement agencies with authorisation of the competent authority and vice versa.


• Under it both countries shall assist each other in the collection of revenue claims. It further provides for exemption of interest income from taxation in the source country.


• This exemption will be with respect to debt claims insured by the Government or Government owned financial institutions.
