Air India operates the world’s longest all women flight

National carrier Air India successfully flew World’s longest all-woman operated and supported flight from the national capital New Delhi to San Francisco.Flight was operated as part of International Women’s Day celebrations and travelled a distance of around 14,500 kilometres in close to 17 hours. The non stop flight to San Francisco took off on 6th March 2016 from New Delhi.
Key facts:

• The flight was under the command of Kshamta Bajpayee & Shubhangi Singh. They were supported by 1st Officers Ramya Kirti Gupta & Amrit Namdhari.


• Entire operations in this historic flight on one of the world’s longest route were handled by the women.


• They handled all operations including the cockpit crew to cabin crew, check-in staff, doctor, customer care staff, ATC (air traffic control) and the entire ground handling.


• Currently, National carrier Air India has about 3,800 women employees, including the pilots, engineers, cabin crew, doctors, technicians, security personnel & executives.

Pranab Mukherjee conferred Infosys Prize 2015 In New Delhi

President Pranab Mukherjee conferred Infosys Prize 2015 on 6 winners in New Delhi. The awards were received by the Prof Umesh Waghmare, Prof Jonardon Ganeri, Dr Amit Sharma, Prof Mahan Mj, Prof G Ravindra Kumar and Dr Srinath Raghavan.
About the Infosys Prize 2015 Winners:
Engineering & Computer Science: Won by Prof. Umesh Waghmare of Theoretical Sciences Unit, of Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), Bangalore.

Prof. Umesh Waghmare was awarded for his innovative use of 1st principles theories & modelling in insightful investigations of microscopic mechanisms responsible for specific properties of certain materials such as topological insulators, ferroelectrics, multiferroics & graphene.
Humanities: Won by the Prof. Jonardon Ganeri, Global Network Professor of Philosophy, New York University and Recurrent Visiting Professor, Department of Philosophy, King’s College London, UK.

Prof. Jonardon Ganeri was awarded for his originality in interpreting and scrutinizing analytical Indian Philosophy & shedding light on dichotomy between Indian & Greek traditions of philosophical reasoning.
Life Sciences: Won by the Dr. Amit Sharma, Group Leader, Structural and Computational Biology Group, International Centre for Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology, New Delhi.

Dr. Amit Sharma was awarded for his pioneering contributions towards deciphering the molecular structure, at the atomic level, of key proteins involved in the biology of pathogenesis of the deadly malarial parasite.
Mathematical Sciences: Won by the Prof Mahan Mj, Professor of Mathematics, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai.

Prof Mahan Mj was awarded for establishing a central conjecture in the Thurston program to study hyperbolic Three-manifolds and introduced important new tools to study fundamental groups of complex manifolds.
Physical Sciences: Won by the Prof. G Ravindra Kumar, Professor in the Department of Nuclear and Atomic Physics (DNAP), Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai.

Prof. G Ravindra Kumar was awarded for his contributions to the physics of high intensity laser matter interactions. He provided, for the 1st time, unequivocal evidence of turbulent magnetic fields and the discovery of terahertz frequency acoustic waves, in laser produced hot dense plasmas. These results have significance to testing stellar and astrophysical scenarios.
Social Sciences: Won by the Dr. Srinath Raghavan, Senior Fellow, Centre for Policy Research, New Delhi.

Dr. Srinath Raghavan was awarded for outstanding research that synthesizes military history, international politics, and strategic analysis into powerful & imaginative perspectives on India in global context.
About the Infosys Prize

• The prize was established in 2009 and is given in 6 categories.

• The 6 categories are: Engineering & Computer Science, Humanities, Life Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Physical Sciences & Social Sciences

• The Infosys Prize is awarded under the aegis of the Infosys Science Foundation, a not for profit trust instituted in February 2009.

• The prize for each category consists of a purse of 65 lakh rupees, a 22 karat gold medallion and a citation certificate.

Fourth India Africa Hydrocarbons Conference begins in New Delhi

The 4th edition of India Africa Hydrocarbons Conference (IAHC) has begun in New Delhi. 2 day conference aims at enhancing greater co-operation between India & African continent in the field of Hydrocarbons. It also seeks to explore opportunities, bridge boundaries and boost bilateral trade between India & Africa.

• 22 African nations have participated of which nine are represented by their Ministers. These nine countries are Morocco, Algeria, Liberia, Mauritius, South Sudan, Sudan, Tunisia, Equatorial Guinea & Senegal.


• Provide a global forum and common platform to African Countries to share their vision and chart out the road map for extended energy co-operation.


• Bring together African leaders in and also CEOs from India and abroad to exchange expert insights and develop strategies for enhancing energy co-operation.

India and Africa Relations for Energy Security:

• India – African nations have common colonial past and enjoyed political and cultural ties. However, energy security stands as one of the major focus area of the bilateral ties.


• Presently, India is importing close to 75% of its crude oil and is seeking to diversifying import basket to meet its energy requirements.


• Oil imports from Africa play a significant role in meeting the demands of India. In June 2015, Nigeria had stood as the 2nd largest supplier of oil to India.


• Though Africa has huge hydrocarbon resources, it lacks capital, technology & ability, experience and manpower to exploit these resources for future growth.


• This can serve as the catalyst to encourage proper co-operation in the hydrocarbon energy sector as India can provide investment capital for development needs of African countries.
