Hashim Thaci sworn in as President of Kosovo

Hashim Thaci has sworn in as the new President of Kosovo after he was elected by the parliament in March 2016. Hashim Thaci succeeds Atifete Jahjaga. With this, he becomes 4th President of Kosovo after the European country had unilaterally declared independence from Serbia in 2008. Prior getting elected as President he was serving as Deputy Prime Minister & Foreign Minister in the Government led by the Isa Mustafa.
About Hashim Thaci:


  • Hashim Tachi Born on April 24, 1968 in the Drenica region of central Kosovo. From the early 1990s as a student, Hashim Thaci was involved in passive resistance to the Belgrade authorities.

  • Hashim Thaci had rose to prominence as the political leader of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), a paramilitary organisation that was acting during the Kosovo War.

  • He was the 1st Prime Minister of Kosovo after it had unilaterally declared independence from Serbia in 2008. He was in office from January 2008 to December 2014.

  • Kosovo It is a disputed territory and partially recognised state in South-Eastern Europe after it had unilaterally declared its independence from Serbia in February 2008.

  • Its independence has been recognised by the United State and many EU countries. Since 1999, Kosovo is under UN administration after the NATO intervention had ousted Serbian forces.

  • It is land-locked in the central Balkan Peninsula and is facing long-term severe ethnic tensions between Kosovo’s Albanian & Serb communities.
