On 30 November 2015 the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) released the Measuring the Information Society Report 2015. It was launched on the 1st day of the World
Telecommunication ICT Indicators Symposium (WTIS) 2015 in Hiroshima, Japan.
The report, through ICT Development Index (IDI), captures the level of ICT developments in 167 economies worldwide and compares progress made since the year 2010.
As per the report, India ranked 131 out of 167 nations surveyed in terms of information & communication technology development.
Key findings of the report
• Top Five countries with higher ICT development are South Korea (1), Denmark (2), Iceland (3), the UK (4) & Sweden (5).
• Bottom Five countries are Malawi (163), Madagascar (164), Ethiopia (165), Eritrea (166) & Chad (167).
• In 2015, only 6.7% of households in Least Developing Countries (LDCs) had Internet access compared with 46% of households worldwide and more than 80% of households in developed countries.
• Globally, 46% of men and 41 % of women are Internet users.
• The results show that all of the 167 economies included in the IDI improved their IDI values between 2010 & 2015.
• The price of mobile cellular services continues to fall across the world, as the number of mobile cellular subscriptions approaches 7.1 billion & mobile network population coverage reaches close to 95 %.
• The rapid spread of ICT infrastructure and devices is accelerating the progress of the Internet of Things (IoT).
• IoT is expected to significantly impact almost every social and economic sector, including education, healthcare, agriculture, transportation and manufacturing.
Report with respect to India
• Compared to its 125th rank in 2010, India was placed at the 131st position in the overall ranking with 2.69 IDI score.
• In terms of IDI access and IDI use categories India was placed at the 135th position.
• However, in terms of IDI skills India was placed at the 120th position.
• India’s mobile-cellular telephone subscriptions per 100 inhabitants were 74.48 in 2015 growing from 62.4 in 2010.
• Compared to 6.1% in 2010, the percentage of households with computer has gone up to 13% in 2015.
• The percentage of households with Internet access was 15.33, growing 3fold from 4.2 in 2010.
• Individuals using the Internet increased to 18% in 2015 from 7.5% in 2010.
