Every year World Water Day is observed globally on 22nd March to preserve and ration consumption of water.
Significance of the Day: World Water Day is observed to make a difference for the members of global population who suffer from water related issues. It marks a day to prepare for how we manage water in the future.
2016 Theme: “Better Water, Better Jobs”. It focuses on the central role that water plays in creating & supporting of the good quality jobs.
Background:
World Water Day was 1st formally proposed in Agenda 21 of United Nations Conference on Environment & Development (UNCED) held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1992. Later, the United Nation General Assembly (UNGA) accepted the recommendation of UNCED & celebrated the 1st World Water Day on 22nd March 1993. Since then this day is observed annually to draw attention on the importance of the fresh-water and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. 2015 theme of World Water Day was ‘Water & Sustainable Development’.
