Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela Prize to Jorge Sampaio, Helena Ndume

 


Jorge Sampaio or Helena Ndume have been awarded with the inaugural Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela Prize. The award was bestowed upon them as part of the annual commemoration of Nelson Mandela International Day on 18 July.
Jorge Sampaio:

Sampaio was conferred with this award for his contribution & struggle for the restoration of democracy in Portugal. Jorge Sampaio is the former president of Portugal and was in office for one decade from 1996-2006. He also had served as the mayor of Lisbon from 1989-1995.
Helena Ndume:

Helena is a female ophthalmologist from Namibia. She was bestowed with this award for her contribution in treating eye related illnesses or blindness of people in Namibia and throughout the developing world.
About Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela Prize:


  • Established in June 2014 by the UN General Assembly.

  • It was established to pay homage to the former South African President Nelson Mandela for his extraordinary life and legacy of reconciliation, social transformation and political transition.

  • Bestowed upon persons in recognition of their achievements especially who have dedicated their life for the service of humanity and in the promotion of community development and social cohesion.
