Karnal Singh, an IPS officer of the 1984 batch of union territories cadre, was on 19 August 2015. Karnal singh assigned the additional charge of Director of Enforcement Directorate (ED).Karnal Singh will handle the office of the director for a period of 3 months or until the another orders for a regular appointment.
His name for the post was approved by Appointments Committee of the Cabinet. This is the 1st time an IPS officer has been chosen for the key post under the Department of Revenue.
Karnal Singh presently serving as the Special Director in Centre Region of Enforcement Directorate (CRED), will replace Mr. Rajan S Katoch. Ranjan Kotoch was given 3 extensions as ED Director.
Enforcement Directorate (ED)
- The ED is a law enforcement agency and the economic,intelligence agency responsible for enforcing economic laws and in other case of fighting economic crime in India.
- It is mandated to investigate cases of money laundering and foreign exchange rule violations.
- The ED is part of the Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance.
- It comprises officers of the Indian Revenue Service, Indian Police Service and the Indian Administrative Service.
