GSAT-6 communication satellite placed in orbit by Indian Space Research Organization(ISRO)

ISRO has been successfully placed GSAT-6 communication satellite into its intended geosynchronous transfer orbit. GSAT-6 was launched by the indigenously built Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle-D6 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikotta.
About the GSAT-6 satellite:

  • GSAT-6 satellite was carrying C-Band and C-Band transponders meant for the public and strategic purposes.

  • The GSAT-6 communication satellite is having S-Band Unfurlable Antenna of six m diameter.

  • S-Band Unfurlable Antenna is the largest antenna made by ISRO for a satellite.

  • GSAT-6 satellite will be deployed in constellation of India’s GSAT communication satellites.

  • The GSAT-6 communication satellite has mission life of next nine years

About Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle-D6:

  •  GSLV-D6 is 3-stage and heavy weight rocket with the indigenously made by Cryogenic Upper Stage (CUS).

  • It is fueled by the  liquid Oxygen and the liquid Hydrogen propellants.

  • Cryogenic Upper Stage provides rocket to more thrust for every kilogram(kg) of propellant it burns compared to the earlier solid and earth-storable liquid propellant  all rocket stages.

  • This was the  9th flight of the GSLV. And it marks the 2nd successful GSLV launch using an indigenous cryogenic engine.
