Tripura Legislative Assembly passed a resolution for abolishing death penalty. The resolution to send a proposal in this regard to the Union Government was forwarded by the Congress MLA Jitendra Sarkar.Chief Minister Manik Sarkar led Tripura state government has clearly mentioned that death penalty is given in rarest of the rare case, but in the present scenario the current law need changes from humanitarian point of view.State govt. also mentioned that capital punishment also has not yielded effective results and also it has not reduced the declination of heinous crimes.
Recently the debate on capital punishment was sparked when Yakub Memon was executed in the Nagpur Central Jail on July 30, 2015 at the end of a long legal battle.Yakub Memon was convicted under the charges of terrorism for his involvement in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case.It should be noted that most of the developed countries in the world have abolished the death penalty and only 58 countries still are following or practising the old law.
