Vassiliki Thanou is a first female Prime Minister of Greece:

President of Greece’s Supreme Court Vassiliki Thanou has been appointed as  first female Prime Minister. She was sworn in as head of a caretaker govt. that will lead nation until next snap election which  scheduled to be held in the September 2015.


Background:


  • She was appointed as caretaker  PM by President Prokopis Pavlopoulos​, after leaders of the three main political parties of the  parliament failed to form a coalition govt.

  • To replace the  outgoing PM Alexis Tsipras. Mr Alexis Tsipras had resigned from the office after members of his radical-left Syriza party had rebelled against his govt.

  • over the issue of austerity measures demanded by  nation’s creditors.
